NekonyancerIn *Paiko,* players will take turns deploying tiles on the battlefield. Each tile will exert *threat,* which allows players to place tiles in new locations and capture enemy tiles! Each tile in the contested *middlegrounds* or the opponent's *homeground* is worth 1 or 2 points for as long as it remains there. [green]The first player to reach 10 points wins the game![/green]2maintitlebar_content

NekonyancerEach player is given an identical set of tiles they can draw from, called their *reserve.* There are *8* different kinds of tiles and *3* copies of each, making a total of *24* tiles per reserve. Our reserve is in the bottom-right corner. As you can see, all our tiles our *white.* Our opponent's *black* tiles are in the top-left corner.3pk-piece-5

NekonyancerAt the beginning of the game, each player has to select their *opening hand.* [blue]This is a 3-step process:[/blue] *1.* White player (us) draws *7* tiles from their reserve. *2.* Black player draws *9* tiles from their reserve. *3.* White player draws *1* more tile.4pk-piece-5

NekonyancerThis part is a little finicky in Tutorial Mode, so I'll do it for you. You haven't clicked on any tiles yet, have you? If you have, return all the tiles to the reserve by clicking on them. Then *continue.* [red]!!! If you don't return the tiles as they were before continuing, the rest of the tutorial may not function correctly![/red]5pk-piece-2

NekonyancerOkay, I took our first *7* tiles. Next, our opponent will draw *9* tiles!1pk-piece-29

NekonyancerFinally, we'll draw one last tile. *Take one from the top-middle stack (Sword). Then click on [blue]"Confirm"[/blue] at the top!*1pk-piece-4

NekonyancerNow we're ready to start playing! [blue]On our turn, we must perform one of the following actions:[/blue] • *Deploy* a tile. • *Shift* a tile. • *Draw* 3 tiles from our reserve. As you might expect, we'll start by *deploying!*1maintitlebar_content

Nekonyancer*Deploying* a tile means selecting a tile in our hand and placing it on a valid space on the board. [green]We can only deploy on spaces that are...[/green] • in our [blue]*Homeground*[/blue] OR • *threatened* by at least one of our tiles. [red]In addition, we cannot deploy on spaces that are...[/red] • black. • threatened by an opponent's tile. • cut in half by the edge of the board.2maintitlebar_content

NekonyancerI know that's a lot to absorb at once, but it will make more sense as we move forward. At the beginning of the game, our only deployment options are [blue]*Homeground*[/blue] spaces. [green](Step 10/44)[/green]3pk-board-space-7-8

NekonyancerLet's deploy a *Bow!* *1.* Select a [blue]*Bow*[/blue] tile in our hand. NekonyancerOkay, that's it for our first turn! But before we move on, let's take a closer look at the tile we just played. If you *hover* over the bow with your mouse, you'll see a diagram that shows what spaces it *threatens.*1pk-piece-8

NekonyancerSince we rotated our Bow 90 degrees, it *threatens* [red]*these spaces,*[/red] which are in one of the *middleground* areas. [green]!!! Reminder:[/green] we can deploy on our Homeground or spaces we *threaten!* [blue]Next, let's see what our opponent does...[/blue]2pk-board-space-9-9

NekonyancerIt's our turn again, and I think we should deploy another tile. Thanks to our Bow, we can reach a few spaces in the *Middleground.* But remember, we cannot deploy on any spaces that our opponent threatens. NekonyancerWe were able to reach the *Middleground* thanks to the threat provided by our Bow. Since our sword is now threatening [red]all the spaces our opponent's bow is threatening,[/red] we prevented our opponent from doing the same thing! They'll have to deploy on their Homeground again, treading water while we secure an aggressive position! [green][tip] Expanding your sphere of influence while limiting your opponent's is a key strategic feature of this game![/green]2pk-piece-4

NekonyancerBefore our opponent takes their next turn, take a look at our [red]*Player Info Panel.*[/red] As you can see, we now have 1⭐. That's because we placed a tile in a Middleground space! It's worth 1⭐ for as long as it remains there!3player_score_11941354

NekonyancerInstead of deploying a new tile, our opponent decided to *shift* their Bow! Most tiles can *shift* two spaces orthogonally (up/down/left/right). [green](Step 20/44)[/green]1pk-piece-31

NekonyancerOur opponent's shift did not open up any new deployment options for them - the spaces threatened by their Bow are still threatened by our Sword - [red]but now their Bow is threatening our Sword directly![/red]3pk-board-space-11-8

NekonyancerWhenever a tile is threatened by *two* different tiles, it is *captured.* That means it is removed from the board. [blue]We'd better do something to protect our sword![/blue]4pk-board-space-11-9

NekonyancerLet's counter our opponent's shift with our own shift! *1.* Select our *Sword.* *2.* Move it 2 spaces *up.* *3. [blue]Confirm![/blue]*5pk-board-space-11-7

Nekonyancer[green]Good![/green] Our Sword is no longer threatened by our opponent's Bow! In fact, we're now threatening them!1pk-board-space-11-7

NekonyancerHowever, our opponent doesn't have to worry too much because their Bow is in their [blue]*Homeground.*[/blue] Tiles in their own Homeground are automatically in *cover.* Tiles in *cover* need to be threatened by *3* tiles to be captured, not *2!*2pk-piece-31

NekonyancerOur opponent placed an *Air* tile, which threatens all of [red]*these spaces*[/red] - as well as our Sword. Unlike most tiles, Air tiles cannot shift. Should we shift our Sword out of danger again? Nah... I have a better idea.1pk-board-space-11-7

Nekonyancer[green]Good![/green] *Water* tiles threaten diagonally and provide *cover* for friendly tiles in orthogonally adjacent spaces. In this case, our Water tile is threatening *both* of our opponent's tiles *and* covering our Sword!1pk-board-space-11-7

NekonyancerOur opponent isn't backing down! They played an Earth tile to increase the threat on our sword. If it weren't for the cover provided by our Water tile, it would have been *captured!* Our Sword can't handle any more threat though, so we need to act!1pk-board-space-11-7

NekonyancerWe have another tile that can provide cover (the Sai), but unlike threat, cover is *NOT* cumulative. Providing additional cover for our Sword will not do anything. [blue]To save our Sword, I think we should shift again.[/blue] [green](Step 30/44)[/green]2pk-piece-2

NekonyancerOur opponent played another Bow, threatening our Water tile, but they did not address the danger their first Bow is in! If we threaten it with one more tile, we can *capture* it!1pk-piece-31

Nekonyancer*Excellent!* We stacked up three layers of threat on the opponent's bow, overcoming the cover provided by their Homeground and *capturing* it! When a tile is captured, it doesn't go back to the owner's hand or reserve - it is removed from the game entirely.1pk-board-space-10-6

Nekonyancer*That's not all!* When a tile is captured, the tile's owner must choose a tile in their opponent's reserve and move it to their hand.2pk-board-space-10-6

NekonyancerIn this case, our opponent chose to give us a Lotus. It can't threaten anything, but it's the ultimate defensive tool! It can cover many tiles - including itself - and can be deployed anywhere on the board, ignoring normal deployment rules. Unfortunately, it doesn't grant victory points like other tiles do.1pk-piece-11

NekonyancerOur opponent played a Fire tile! Fire has a wide threat range, but it needs to be deployed carefully. It indiscriminately threatens friends, foes, and even itself!1pk-piece-41

NekonyancerIn this case, our opponent's Fire tile is threatening four tiles: our Sword, our Earth, their Earth, and of course, itself.2pk-piece-20

NekonyancerThis is a good time to deploy our Lotus! *1.* Select the [blue]*Lotus*[/blue] in our hand. NekonyancerEventually, we'll run low on tiles in our hand, but when we need to, we can spend a turn to draw three tiles of our choice from our reserve.2pk-piece-3
