u-topiaWelcome to *BUTTONS*!
BUTTONS is a game that will test your mettle with colorful buttons and dice.
!!!
This tutorial is designed to be done on a PC.
If you have trouble seeing your game board, please reduce the size of the window each time.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
u-topia*Aim of the game*
Each player skilfully tries to place buttons on their own game board and thus gain stars.
The first player to lay 5 stars in a row or has at least 12 stars on their game board, wins the game.2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
u-topia*General flow*
The first player rolls the dice.
All players play with the rolls.
When the turn is over, the next player rolls the dice.
This is repeated.
I will explain it in detail on the next page.3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
u-topia*Game procedure*
Each player receives a game board.
The 4 button cards are distributed among the players, so that each player receives 2 cards.
(If you're playing 3 or 4 players, 1 card of each.)
The button cards will be displayed in the upper left corner of each player's game board.
The player with the red button on the button card is the starting player in the first round.4archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
u-topiaBUTTONS is played over a number of rounds.
The first player of a round is always the player holding the button card picturing the red button.
When it‘s your turn, you must decide on one of the following actions: [red]*ROLL THE DICE*[/red] or [blue]*OPT OUT*[/blue]5archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
u-topia*ROLL THE DICE*
On your turn, you take all available dice and roll them.
That‘s all 6 dice at the beginning of a round, but later it can be less!
[red]6 dice consist of the following[/red]
- 1 white dice with gold pips
- 1 black dice with gold pips
- 4 black dice with white pips6archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
u-topiaNow let's roll the dice.
*Action*: click "[red]*Roll 6 Dice*[/red]"
(I will explain "Opt Out" later.)7archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment010
u-topiaLet's look at the game log.
The dice you rolled were as follows.
- White dice with gold pips - 3.
- Black dice with gold pips - 2.
- Black dice with white pips - 6, 6, 5 and 5.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment61be52c47c47a00
u-topiaIf it‘s currently your turn, combine the white die with any black die, and subsequently you must lay a button on the space in the row matching the white die and in the column corresponding to the black die.
With this pattern, you must lay a button from among the 3 combinations of white 3 / black 2, 6 and 5.
The game board also emphasizes that combination with a purple frame.2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment61be52c47c47a00cell_2_5 15 cell_5_5 15 cell_6_5 15
u-topiaLet's lay a button on white 3 black 5.
*Action*: click [red]*finger icon*[/red]3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment61be52c47c47a10cell_5_3 16
u-topiaNice.
You have lied a translucent white button on top of a white 3 black 5 red button.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment61be52c82623b00
u-topiaPlayers whose turn it is not theirs may lay a button on the space in the row corresponding to the white dice with gold pips and in the column matching the black dice with gold pips.
(All black dice with white pips are irrelevant.)
You are not forced to lay a button.
There is no penalty for not being able to place a button.2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment61be52c82623b00
u-topiaThe gold pips you rolled is 3 white and 2 black.
This means that other players can lay their buttons on the white 3 black 2 spaces.3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment61be52c82623b00cell_85291838_2_3 6
u-topiaThe status of opponents game boards is always displayed.
This time, your opponent did not lay the button.
It is now the turn of the next player to roll the dice.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment61be52ca8667400
u-topia*There are rules for laying buttons.*
*Players may not lay a button, if by doing so they would break one of the laying rules.*1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment61be52cd1c5c900
u-topia- No more than one button may lie on any one space on the game board.
- Buttons may never lie beside each other, neither horizontally nor vertically.
- However, buttons may lie in a diagonal line to each other.
- No buttons may be laid on a space already occupied by stars – but may be laid adjacent to spaces with stars.
- Short and sweet: No buttons beside buttons!
I'll explain about stars later.2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment61be52cd1c5c900
u-topiaThe dice opponent rolled were as follows.
- White dice with gold pips - 3.
- Black dice with gold pips - 4.
- Black dice with white pips - 3, 2, 4 and 4.
This means that you can lay a buttons on the white 3 black 4 spaces.3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment61be52cd1c5c900
u-topiaBut you've already laid the button next to white 3 black 4.
You can't lay it this time because it would violate the rules.4archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment61be52cd1c5c900
u-topiaIt is your turn again.
Let's roll the dice.
*Action*: click "[red]*Roll 6 Dice*[/red]"1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment61be52d64986c10
u-topiaThe dice you rolled were as follows.
- White dice with gold pips - 6.
- Black dice with gold pips - 6.
- Black dice with white pips - 2, 2, 6 and 4.
This time, let's lay a button on white 6 black 2.
*Action*: click "[red]*finger icon*[/red]"1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment61be52deb20cb10cell_2_6 16
u-topiaWell done.
The player does these things repeatedly to progress through the game.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment61be52df5564d00
u-topiaSometimes it can happen on your turn that you are not able to lay a button, since you would otherwise violate the laying rules.
You must then
- remove all buttons from your game board and return them and
- take 2 of the black dice with white pips, just rolled, and place it on the depot at the top left of your game board. (If you're playing 3 or 4 players, 1 dice.)1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment61be52f639a4e00
u-topiaWith that, you are out of that round and must wait until the beginning of the next round.
Until then, you may not place any buttons on your game board.
The dice on your game board may also not be used by any other player until the end of that round!2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment61be52f639a4e00
u-topiaIf you lose the button, you can't even place a star to fulfill the game's victory condition.
Of course you don't want to do that, right?
If you already have at least one button on your game board, and are afraid of not being able to place a button during the action ROLLING THE DICE, you can decide to opt out of this round, to avoid losing everything. 3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment61be52f639a4e00
u-topia*OPT OUT*
Take 2 black dice with white pips and place it in the depot at the top left of your game board. (If you're playing 3 or 4 players, 1 dice.)
You must now wait until the end of the round and may not lay any buttons on your game board until then.
The dice on your game board may not be used by any other player until the end of that round!4archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment61be52f639a4e00
u-topiaThen pass the remaining dice to the next player whose depot is still empty.
If all depots are occupied by a die, the round ends here.5archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment61be52f639a4e00
u-topiaYou have lied 4 buttons in this round.
You've done enough for this round, let's choose OPT OUT and get out of the round.
*Action*: click "[red]*OPT OUT*[/red]"6archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment61be52f639a4e10
u-topiaYour opponent is rolling the dice for more success.
Notice that the number of dice rolled by the opponent has been reduced from 6 to 4.
You can't do anything else this round.
You can only hope that your opponent's dice rolls are so bad that he can't lay the button.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment61be5302e97bd00
u-topiaYour opponent also played OPT OUT.
The round ends here, as all players have dice in their depots!1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment61be53103fc1e00
u-topia*End of a round*
A round ends as soon as each player has a die in their depot, no matter whether they have opted out or have gambled and lost.
Now it‘s time to count up the score!2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment61be531041b1d00
u-topiaThe number of stars you get will be determined as follows
- 1 star for opting out.
- 1 star for each symbol color that you have covered at least 3 times with a button.3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment61be531041b1d00
u-topia- 1 bonus star, if the player has covered up the symbol on his button card at least three times.
!!!
If you have two button cards, you need to do this three times per color, not three times for the total of the two colors.
If both colors are done at least 3 times, the bonus will be 2 stars.4archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment61be531041b1d00
u-topiaA player who cannot place a button and loses everything will not get a star.
*The stars gained are now distributed on the spaces, on which buttons have been laid in this round.*
The swapped buttons are returned to the pool.5archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment61be531041b1d00
u-topiaLook at your game board.
You have laid 3 on red and 1 on blue for a total of 4 this round.
1 star for OPT OUT
1 star for 3 reds
1 star for button cards are red
You got a total of 3 stars this round.6archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment61be531041b1d00
u-topiaNow, let's place a star in the space where the button is laid.
The victory condition is lay 5 stars in a row, so let's line them up efficiently.
*Action*: click "[red]*finger icon*[/red]"1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment61be53179ffa510button_2_6 16
u-topiaLet's place the second star.
*Action*: click "[red]*finger icon*[/red]"1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment61be531858fee10button_5_3 16
u-topiaNow, check and see whether any player has already collected enough stars to win the game.
If none of the players has collected enough stars, play another round.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment61be531a57b3400
u-topia*Preparation for the next round*
Now all the players remove their remaining buttons from the game board and return them to the pool.
Stars remain on their spaces!
Each player passes his button card to the player on their left.
Remove all dice from the depots.
The new starting player (the player with the red button on the card) takes the dice and begins a new round.2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment61be531a57b3400
u-topiaDo you understand the flow?
Finally, let's review the *victory conditions*.
If, at the end of a round, a player has:
- 5 stars in a horizontal or vertical row, without any gaps (not diagonal) or
- 12 stars on the game board,
the game ends.
This player wins the game.3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment61be531a5946500
u-topiaLuck is important, but the way you lay a button is also important.
Play well and win!
Thanks for reading to the end.4archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment61be531a5946500
