Tapestry is an efficiency puzzle. Prioritise getting income buildings early and often. Landmarks are a nice bonus but don't justify pushing a track that doesn't benefit you.
Resources are action points. More actions is better than victory points, especially in the early game.
Pick and choose your technology, remembering you have 1 free upgrade each income turn.
Military and exploration tracks partially pay for themselves in the early game via explore and conquer actions. Science and technology do not.
Science is better saved until after you have advanced into more expensive areas of other tracks. Before taking the "advance with no benefit", push other tracks to just before a less useful space (For example, Mil 4, Explore 5 are less useful)
There are several Trap Tapestry cards that will reverse an incoming topple and give the defender a resource.
If you are not planning on earning more income buildings, it may be worth taking an early income turn for the extra resources and/or an opportune tapestry card play.
