"check the corresponding symbol ([OldLady], [Tourist] or [Student]) as if you reached it with a marker." means "it behave the same as if you put a marker on a road that leads you to that symbol.".
If you check the 2+[OldLady], you check an [OldLady] as if a marker has reached an [OldLady] icon on the map.
