Before taking the first constellation reward action, there was a button that let me keep adding resources; however, after I took the chain of reward action which included playing cards and moving the octopus, it no longer let me add more resource to constellation.

This is according to the rules. If you're going to add resources to constellations, you need to do it as you receive the resources. This often happens at the same time as drawing cards, so you can draw cards and still place them, but any other actions will result in no longer being able to place resources.
tl;dr: After you move or play cards, it's too late to go back and place those resources.
